‘The Muppets’ meet ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’?
Cannes is a notoriously great place to sell films, and this year one particularly exciting collaboration is being touted to buyers.
Guillermo Del Toro has long been discussed in relation to a new version of ‘Pinocchio’, but whether he would direct or not has been up for debate. But speaking at a packed teleconference at Cannes, he told the assembled cinema bigwigs:
“When we originally talked about this project I was going to direct but then I said I would executive produce it. But everything with the production discussions became more and more specific and I began to realize I was getting more and more involved.”
The Jim Henson Company is already backing the film, so we can anticipate some top-notch puppetry, and Del Toro has also confirmed that the film will be shot in 3D to make it ‘bleed into the audience’.
There are also early hints at who may feature on the voice cast, as the director revealed that he had been approached by Daniel Radcliffe who wanted to get involved, and that his wish list included Tom Waits and Christopher Walken. Whose wouldn’t?
We can’t wait to hear more about Del Toro’s dark vision for this classic tale.
