Mysterious Movie Titles

Ever been confused by a movie title of a film? To celebrate the release of Machine Gun Preacher tomorrow we’ve been having a look at the films you really can’t judge by their cover!

Machine Gun Preacher (2011)

Although it sounds like Hobo with a Shotgun’s older brother, Machine Gun Preacher is actually the true tale of a rebel Sam Childers (Gerard Butler) who found his cause and fought to save refugees in Sudan.

Submarine (2011)

Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut may be set by the sea in Swansea, but this coming of age tale of love and family doesn’t feature a single submarine.

Tyrannosaur (2011)

Critically acclaimed Tyrannosaur doesn’t feature any dinosaurs, but tells the tale of a violent alcoholic man called Joseph who strikes up an unusual friendship with a religious charity shop worker called Hannah as he tries to change his ways. We shan’t tell you the reason why it’s called Tyrannosaur as it’s a spoiler!

The Constant Gardner (2001)

This misleading film is not about a obsessive compulsive gardener but is in fact based on the book by John Le Carré in which a British diplomat’s wife is murdered. Another Le Carré mystery title: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was made into a film and released earlier this year.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

A sleeper hit until it hit its home entertainment release, the title refers to the name of the prison that protagonist Andy Dufresne spends nearly two decades in after being accused of killing his wife and her lover before he escapes.
Silence of the Lambs (1991)No fluffy sheep in this film, instead this terrifying film introduced Hannibal Lecter to the big screen, a cannabilistic serial killer who has been horrifying audiences across the globe in the twenty years since the film’s release.

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Not a reservoir or a dog in sight, Quentin Tarantino’s debut film is a botched diamond heist with eight men unable to trust each other as they try to locate a mole in their midst. After its release, frequent pop culture references to this film ensued, as well as instant stardom and acclaim for Tarantino.

Chariots of Fire (1981)

From the title this sounds like it should be set in the Roman era, however it’s actually set in 1924 and is based on the story of two athletes in the Olympics. The title is based on a poem by William Blake which was adapted into British hymn Jerusalem, and the hymn is heard at the end of the film

Trainspotting (1996)

Based on the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh, the film follows the lives of a group of heroin addicts in Edinburgh. The title refers to the hobby of trainspotting as a spectator sport, and also the idea of wasting time.
