If you’ve managed to keep up with the increasingly incomprehensible Saw franchise, then you’ve done better than most. With the Jigsaw killer dead but not forgotten, there is a new man in charge of the gruesome devices set to test the morals of the immoral.
The sheer brilliance and originality of the first film will, by definition, have diminished by this the sixth outing. That said this film does have moments which stand out and the inventiveness of the action (if not the story) make it worth a watch. The plot speeds along at a welcome pace, never pausing long enough to make you wonder what is going on. The new villain of the piece is convincing enough and the fact that he is playing for both sides (being a cop as well as a vindictive so and so) make for an engaging character.
We still need Jigsaw (played by Tobin Bell) to drive things along, no bad thing when he is arguably the most iconic character of the past decade. There is a neat twist at the end which kept me guessing and it’s all covered with the trademark gore we’ve come to expect.
