The BFI IMAX offers a very varied film and event programme for November 2009 including a brand new IMAX 3D film opening and the first ever Batman All-Nighter.

From Wednesday 4 November, the cinema presents Disney’s A Christmas Carol An IMAX 3D Experience, a new version of the classic Dickens tale from filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (Polar Express, Forest Gump). The film features the talents of Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman and Colin Firth and has been digitally re-mastered for the unparalleled image and sound quality of IMAX 3D. Don’t miss the Christmas event of 2009 on Britain’s biggest screen.

Following its growing popularity at the cinema during the year, the New York Metropolitan Opera’s groundbreaking series of high definition live transmissions returned to the BFI IMAX for a new season in October. The first two shows were sold out and thousands of advance tickets have already been sold across the 2009/2010 programme. The next transmission is Turandot on Saturday 7 November at 6.00pm, director Franco Zeffirelli’s breathtaking production of Giacomo Puccini’s last opera.

Also drawing the crowds, making for a lively and good-spirited atmosphere, is the monthly BFI Film Quiz. The next one takes place on Wednesday 11 November at 7.30pm in the Café Bar on the Ground Floor. Prizes include tickets, DVDs and books.

On Friday 20 November at 11.30pm there will be a special event – the first ever Batman All-Nighter (cert 12). Featuring four Caped Crusader films – two from Tim Burton and two from Christopher Nolan – and with two of the films in unbeatable IMAX DMR, the line-up is: Batman (1989) (35mm); Batman Returns (1992) (35mm); Batman Begins (2005) (IMAX DMR); and The Dark Knight (2008) (IMAX DMR) which includes scenes filmed in IMAX. There will be short breaks between each film with complimentary tea and coffee available to help keep everyone awake.

During the same evening, the BFI IMAX will team up with The Big Issue to provide the start and finish point of the magazine’s Big Night Out Winter Walk 2009. 200 people will walk 18 miles through the night to help raise funds for The Big Issue Foundation. The BFI IMAX was built above an area which had a very strong connection to homelessness within the City. Known as The Bull Ring during the 1980s and 1990s, the area became a part of the homeless landscape in London.

Additionally, and back by popular demand, the BFI IMAX’s most successful film ever, The Dark Knight - The IMAX Experience, will screen at 11.30pm on Saturday 21, Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November.

Coming soon…on 18 December the BFI IMAX opens James Cameron’s Avatar - An IMAX 3D Experience. Tickets go on sale next week.
